Your AI model is making decisions on infrastructure that stopped performing as specified. It just does not know yet.

At 200G-per-lane PAM4 optical signalling, a single 10-micron particle — one tenth the diameter of a human hair — on a connector face does not degrade the link. It resets it. Fault tolerance disappears. Binary failure replaces it. The system either meets the physical standard completely or it does not work at all.

At the compute layer, the same principle in a different form. A GPU throttling at 85°C delivers 15–20% less compute per watt than the same chip at 65°C. A scheduler allocating workloads by compute availability does not see thermal state. It does not know the node it just assigned a priority inference job is already stressed and about to throttle. At $10M annual energy spend, the difference between thermally-aware and thermally-blind scheduling is $1.5–2.5M in recoverable cost — from a middleware layer that does not yet exist in production form.

The pattern holds across every physical layer from IoT sensor to optical fibre to compute infrastructure. The intelligence layer above assumes the physical substrate is performing as specified.

It is not.

A billing system acting on corrupted sensor state. An inference engine acting on a thermally throttled node. An autonomous agent acting on a link that reset three seconds ago. In each case the intelligence is confident. The foundation it is standing on has already failed.

The opportunity is not in the intelligence layer. It is in the verification and governance layer between the physical world and the systems acting on it. Least glamorous. Least discussed. Least owned.

Physics always wins.
